Summary

On August 12, 2026, a Facebook page (‘The Great India’) and several X users shared an image claiming that people had built houses inside the crater of a dormant volcano near Mexico City. CyberPeace Research Wing checked the image (also found on Shutterstock identified as the Xico crater) and used Google Maps to verify the site; they found agricultural activity inside the Xico crater and houses only around its outer sections.

CyberPeace analysed the viral picture with AI-detection tools (Hive Moderation and Sightengine), which returned probabilities above 98–99% that the image was AI-generated, and concluded the picture was created using AI and was being shared with a misleading claim that houses exist inside the crater.
