Summary

A multi-region survey of more than 7,200 adults in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia found that 7% of respondents reported experiencing at least one form of AI-generated image-based abuse since turning 18. The report, published by researchers including Nicola Henry of RMIT University, says almost 87% of those victim-survivors experienced at least one negative impact on health, relationships, work or finances.

The forms of visual manipulation described in the study include having an intimate image of oneself created or altered using AI without consent, having an AI-generated intimate image shared without consent, or being threatened with the sharing of such an image. The study reported higher reported rates among people under 35, people from racial and ethnic minority backgrounds, men and people with disabilities, and noted that women reported more severe negative reactions and impacts.
